ILLUSTRATING THE SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE -a picture book.

A few illustrations from a project I completed at the beginning of this year.
I worked with the most amazing, supportive clients I could have ever dreamt of. They are self-publishing a story about a boy in conversation with God. One of the challenges I faced was how to illustrate a spiritual experience without falling into clichés.

The story, which will be self-published by my clients soon, is about a little boy's concern with his own behaviour. As we follow the boy's conversation with God, and we learn about the boy's daily life, we witness his spiritual journey towards self-awareness and joy.

This project was a challenge. How do you illustrate a conversation that takes place in some spiritual realm? Or concepts like regret, friendship and joy?

I wanted to include lots of elements that could frame the conversation and add excitement by telling the boy's everyday story; including his relationship with his mum, his sister and his little dog.

To convey the spiritual experience I used these yellow dots and shafts of light that add warmth as well as an otherworldly feeling.
